Animated Adventure by CORE DESIGN
Reviewed by Lu Richardson.
This adventure game is not bad. It is terrible. And it's not often
I have said such harsh words about this type of product.
I will give its creators the benefit of the doubt and say that it is
unintentionally like the later Space Quest games by Sierra; but
without the brilliant touches and great strokes of humour.
Yes, you are in a futuristic environment where you get to meet
funny creatures as you attempt to get home. And, yes, make the
wrong decision and you are dead. That's about how close it gets to
the Sierra masterpieces.
The graphics, credit where credit is due, are great. That is, the
backgrounds are very good. The animation is awful; all I need to
tell you is that I came too close to a particular piece of
background and the character got stuck there. I had to reboot.
The interface is all right but nowhere near as good as the Sierra
one. It is an unfortunate fact that, if you pick the wrong portion
of the screen for performing an action, you have to go through the
whole rigmarole again to give the same order.
The story is feeble to say the least, and gathering information
from the objects around you is like drawing teeth. Although you
don't actually find yourself opening doors with a wedge of
watermelon (children: don't try this at home), some of the answers
to the problems you encounter are terribly far fetched.
Let me give you an instance of gameplay: barely ten minutes into
the game, I found the only way out of a particular hole was to jump
on a spinning asteroid. It took me 25 minutes to manage it, because
the character was not in precisely the right spot. Next, I had to
open a panel (use metal bar on panel? Naaah! INSERT metal bar on
panel, even though it is evidently closed). Unless I put the guy in
absolutely the correct spot, nothing doing.
It's a great pity, but there you have it. You will lose interest
very rapidly, and it only gets worse as you go on. Bear in mind
that the game is actually very long. Don't let the magnificent
graphics sell you this game - unless you are a totally dedicated
adventure player and you just love ANY adventure, you won't like
it.
